Background
In April 2021, Decipher Group was appointed to recruit an Independent Director to the Board of Calder Stewart. Founded in 1955, Calder Stewart is a national, vertically integrated construction and property company specialising in design and build services to the industrial, commercial, rural and public markets.
Stewart Family Holdings Limited is the investment entity for the Stewart family and owns a number of trading companies and investments. Calder Stewart is proudly family owned and operated and is a business with purpose and possibility. As such, Directors of this Board need capacity and curiosity to be successful.
Approach
The Calder Stewart Board is responsible for setting the strategy and overall direction of the business and hold management accountable for the implementation of that strategy. There were specific competencies required for the role – astute, people-focused director who knows how to nurture and develop commercial talent that will affect sustainable growth – which demanded a thorough and robust governance search approach across the New Zealand talent market.
During the initial calibration meeting with the client – a key interaction that is unique to Decipher Group – as expected, we refined our view on what the “right” candidate looked like to meet the needs of the Calder Stewart Board. This then gave us clarity for the remainder of our search process and also guided our advertising approach. Calder Stewart is a high-profile New Zealand company that has experienced significant and consistent growth; we received a remarkable response to our search and advertising efforts with many 100’s of applications received, that were all methodically screened and reviewed.

A well-respected senior executive and governance professional, Greg was formerly CEO of Ravensdown and currently holds governance roles with Ryman Healthcare, Christchurch City Holdings Limited, TransDiesel and is a trustee of the Maia Health Foundation.
