The Council covers an area of approximately 746,000 hectares of one of New Zealand’s most iconic and picturesque parts of the country, it is also one of the largest Councils in terms of land area. The District is home to four ski fields, golf courses, the National Rowing facilities at Lake Ruataniwha, the Dark Sky Reserve and Mt John Observatory and as such has grown into a tourism mecca. Mackenzie District Council are looking for their next planners to work alongside the District Planning and Policy Team to fulfill Council’s statutory planning obligations under the Resource Management Act and Local Government Act. This is a vital role for council who are focused on the delivery of best practice and innovation with a real community focus – collaboration and embracing kaitiaki principles are at the heart of all they do.

About the opportunity
Reporting into the Manager Planning, the planner will be accountable for planning for the technical delivery of district projects, offering guidance and advice on statutory obligations and supporting the wider organisation. In doing this you will:
  • Process planning applications, including land use and subdivision requests, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance with regulations.
  • Provide timely and expert planning advice to stakeholders, maintaining courteous and professional communication channels.
  • Support the implementation of district plans, policies, and bylaws, identifying and addressing breaches or opportunities for improvement.
  • Respond promptly and accurately to customer complaints and inquiries, demonstrating a commitment to high-quality service delivery.
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety protocols and compliance with relevant legislation, actively participating in risk management processes and ongoing professional development.
To be successful in this role you will:
  • Come from a similar role and hold a relevant qualification.
  • Be confident in effectively communicating with the wider council team and with the community in the areas of planning, programming, and compliance.
  • Have an understanding of the RMA.

About you
Aside from your relevant experience and qualifications, you will most importantly be an effective communicator! You are someone who understands how to engage across diverse communities and groups and is confident in conveying technical information in a language they understand. Coupled with your excellence in communication is your strong attention to detail and ability to produce comprehensive and accurate reporting. Your agile approach means you are able to pivot and focus on priority work as it comes in, you are someone who likes to contribute and enjoys an inclusive and friendly environment.
