Leighton Evans was appointed by Decipher Group as the new Chief Executive of the Rātā Foundation.

The Rātā Foundation is one of the leading independent philanthropic organisations in New Zealand. The Foundation grants between $18-$20 million to more than 800 community groups throughout Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and the Chatham Islands every year.

Leighton is a natural leader with extensive experience in community trust executive management in New Zealand. He has a proven track record implementing regional strategic initiatives, covering economic and community development, and has extensive knowledge gained from managing various commercial investment projects and philanthropic programmes.

Most recently, Leighton was employed as the General Manager of the Eastland Community Trust. In this role, he was the lead executive of the Trust and responsible for managing the Trust’s assets, which exceeded $500 million. He had a positive impact on the growth and development of the Trust and worked collaboratively with its Board to develop vision and strategy.

As Chief Executive, Leighton will be responsible for providing the vision, strategic leadership and effective management to the Rātā Foundation. He will be accountable for the effective management of the Foundation’s investment and financial portfolios, ensuring good governance and staff management, as well as community relations and stakeholder engagement. Leighton aspires to build stronger, more-connected communities facilitated by the work of the Rātā Foundation.

Leighton holds numerous qualifications with Massey University, including a Bachelor of Science (BSc), a Diploma in Engineering and a Graduate Diploma in Management.

He is also a graduate of the Strategic Leadership Programme facilitated by the Institute of Strategic Leadership in Queenstown, and the Company Directors’ Course (CDC) offered by the Institute of Directors.

Leighton commenced his new position with the Rātā Foundation in October 2017.
