The more pertinent question is, are you brave enough to find a role where you truly thrive?

To answer both questions, you need to understand what motivates you – power, achievement, affiliation, purpose, money or autonomy? And can you say that your current role is satisfying that motivation.

If you are still a little unclear, here are five signs that you are in the wrong job – part of the Living and Working Better series from Forbes.

#1: You’re unhappy most of every day, doing this work.
Don’t be in denial about your feelings – they’re pointing you to a very real situation that needs to be dealt with. You don’t have to be miserable or lose your sense of self in order to be gainfully employed.

#2: The environment is tainted with extreme toxicity, including your boss and colleagues.
A job – and your success and joy in it – is shaped by a myriad of other factors including how your organisation treats employees, the outcomes that drive the business forward and the growth you can achieve in your role.

#3: The skills that you’ve been hired to use for this job aren’t a fit for what you enjoy.
What we’re good at is not the same as what we love doing. If your job forces you to use skills that aren’t enjoyable or easy for you, you’ll be miserable and drained every day in your job. And you’ll feel like an impostor much of the time.

#4: You believe deep down that you’re meant for better, bigger, and more thrilling things.
If you feel you’re made for more exciting things, then you are. Don’t be ashamed of it or hide from it.

#5: The outcomes that you’re working toward feel meaningless or negative to you.
You can’t thrive or even succeed a tiny bit if you don’t believe in what your organisation is putting out in the world, or how they’re doing it.

If any of the above strikes a chord with you, remember that the window of opportunity is limited only if we convince ourselves so.
