About Queenstown Airport
Queenstown Airport Corporation Limited (QAC) serves as a vital link between the Southern Lakes region and the rest of New Zealand and the world. The QAC is a council-controlled trading organisation (CCTO) owned by the QLDC (75.01%) and Auckland International Airport Ltd (24.99%). A CCTO is governed by the relevant provisions of the Local Government Act 2002 (LGA) and as such is required to operate profitably and along commercial lines QLDC recognises the airport's pivotal role in enabling and supporting economic development and social wellbeing. As a gateway to the region, QAC emphasises the importance of responsible corporate citizenship, sustainability, and community engagement. QAC is committed to achieving ambitious sustainability targets, including becoming the world's first carbon-zero tourism destination. With a significant capital investment program underway, QAC is poised to deliver a world-class airport facility, ensuring resilience, safety, increased capacity, and innovation.

With the current Chair role reaching its maximum term and retiring by rotation, it is now time to hand over the reins to a new Chair who can steward and drive the organisation forward.

About the opportunity
The Chair of the Queenstown Airport Corporation Board of Directors plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction and ensuring the effective governance of the airport. Key accountability areas include:
  • Providing strategic leadership in a growth environment, aligning with QAC's vision and strategic plans.
  • Leading the board in fulfilling its governance responsibilities, ensuring sound performance and operational efficiency.
  • Leveraging commercial acumen and industry expertise, particularly in aviation and transportation sectors, to drive innovation and sustainability.
  • Overseeing the delivery of significant infrastructure projects within approved budget and scope, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Engaging stakeholders and the community in strategic planning and investment decisions, fostering strong relationships and social license.
  • Demonstrating exemplary people leadership skills, promoting a culture of integrity, ethics, and accountability within the board and organisation.

About you
Ideally you will be a professional director with a proven track record of leading boards in a commercial setting, ideally within the aviation or transport sectors. In addition, public sector experience, particularly in chairing entities within local government or Crown-owned sectors will be advantageous. You will ideally hold a comprehensive understanding and experience in the airline industry, including climate adaptation, decarbonization, and sustainability initiatives within a corporate framework.

The experience you possess in successfully delivering significant infrastructure projects within approved budgets and scopes, is essential. Your exceptional skills in stakeholder and community engagement, particularly in strategic planning and investment, will be well utilised. Above all else strong people leadership skills are a must as is your personal connection to Queenstown which will show in your drive to lead outcomes for the region.
