Employer Interview Tips
Your interview with a prospective candidate is a powerful tool in the candidate selection process. An interview will allow you another insight into the candidate and will let you see how they operate and communicate in formal situations. An interview will also put you as the employer and prospective manager in the spotlight and it is important that you are prepared.
Setting the Scene
- Ensure you have a quiet room free from interruptions.
- Be on time and switch your cell phone off.
Prepare for the interview
- Read the candidate’s CV and cover letter – or additional information provided by a Recruiter.
- Ensure you fully understand the role and the competencies you are looking for. Thoroughly review the position description.
- Prepare interview questions designed to illicit information on particular technical and behavioral competencies relevant for the role and to check on the motivation of the candidate for the role and their career.
- Have these questions formatted into an Interview Guide.
- Confirm that the questions you are asking are legal.
- Take all information and documents mentioned above with you to the interview.
During the interview
- Ensure you take time to initially build rapport with the candidate.
- Use the Interview Guide and ask the same questions of each candidate.
- Give the candidate the opportunity to ask questions and let the candidate do most of the talking.
- Make sure you are prepared to talk about yourself as a manager and about the business – this is your important opportunity to sell the role, the organisation and yourself.
